Modern Salon: How much input did you have into making “Vidal Sassoon The Movie”?

Vidal Sassoon: I was involved in the whole process. You can’t have a film made about yourself without being involved. Between [Producer] Michael Gordon and [Director] Craig Teper, they truly put something together. You’ve got to remember, there’s no actors in this–it’s just people I worked with over the years.

Modern Salon: What is the main message of the movie that salon professionals can walk away with?

Vidal Sassoon: I don’t think there’s anything quite as exciting as what we do. Hairdressing is the only craft where you take a face–maybe someone you’ve never seen before–you look at the bone structure, the height, and the body structure of the woman. You get a feeling, and then you start cutting. If she glides out with a glint in her eye, you know you’ve been successful. There is no other craft where you can physically at that moment change somebody’s look. That alone should make people excited. It certainly made me excited.

Modern Salon: What advice do you have for a stylist who’s just starting out and wants to make a name forthemself?

Vidal Sassoon: It’s really an inner self. You can either be lethargic in life or you can feel yourself. Most young people you talk to don’t realize they have passion within them. They feel ordinary. They shouldn’t because if you are prepared to give so much of yourself to any creative art form, something’s going to come out of you because it’s within all of us.

Modern Salon: In your career you’ve had the salons, the training, the schools, the product line, you’ve been in numerous shows: If you could name one thing, what are you most proud of?

Vidal Sassoon: The training. It would appear that what we had to teach was wanted in many parts of the world by many hairdressers; and of course we love teaching because if you teach something to yourself, it becomes asecret. It dies. If you open academies of schools and you teach what you have to teach, it becomes something that’s part of the norm. The fact that we managed to get our message out there to so many people who wanted it, utilized it, and have taken it further, that has to be it. Doing one super cut that was different, that was all terribly exciting, but being involved with so many hairdressers worldwide, nothing could beat that actually.

There are a lot of good movies to stitch by out there, for example, Pride and Prejudice BBC movie version. I find, especially, a lot of great classics that show women stitching in them. While some show just brief excerpts of women stitching, other movies contain entire themes that seem to revolve around stitching and play an important role in the movie like The Heiress starring Olivia de Havilland. In this film, the art of stitching plays a major role in the movie, and The Heiress happens to be one of my favorites. In fact, at the beginning of the movie, an even-weave fabric is used as a back drop showing the title of the movie and the entire cast of characters. Pride and Prejudice (Pride and Prejudice, the BBC Movie) is not only one of my all time favorite movies, but it also shows young ladies stitching in the parlor as they await the arrival of prospective suitors. Since there are many versions of Pride and Prejudice, the version I have enjoyed the most is from The Romance Collection Special Edition. It is, by far, the most accurate depiction of the book written by Jane Austen in my opinion. Whenever possible, I try to examine the stitching scenes very carefully to pick up subtle nuances about the stitching environment in the movie. With a southern air, North and South starring Patrick Swayze shows women left and right in their voluminous antebellum skirts stitching away while the men have “more important matters to attend to.” Needlearts back then was a way of life and an all-time classic hobby. In fact, it was considered a major part of formal education for young girls and women alike; and the alphabet was often stitched into what we now call a sampler. Movies like Wuthering Heights and Driving Miss Daisy all have scenes in them which depict women embroidering, cross stitching and performing some type of needlework. In Coal Miner’s Daughter, there is a short scene showing Patsy Cline performing cross stitch as she is with her friend Loretta Lynn who has just announced she is going to have another baby. I don’t know about you, but from one fellow stitcher to another, I get a personal thrill in my heart whenever I see characters in movies stitching. It makes me feel connected to that person; and there is the thrill I get when I see someone enjoying a wholesome craft that I and so many others enjoy. Also, the movies are great movies to stitch by. For we are ladies of standing as we are all part of the great class of stitchers, including those of us who enjoy all types of needlework, whether it be embroidery, cross stitch, needlepoint, punch needle, etc. To get started along the path of carrying out the long and revered traditions of stitching, I highly recommend the book, Cross Stitch Made Easy by Janis Applegate. There you will learn a craft that you can pass down to your children, grandchildren and friends. It is an honorable hobby and loved by enthusiasts worldwide. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you can learn the secrets of cross stitch success, including framing techniques, and many other important tips.
